Quick Answer

What follows is the honest version. Where a product has a real drawback for a New Whiteland room, it's stated rather than buried. That's more useful when you're choosing than a page of adjectives would be.

  • Services: faux wood blinds, wood blinds, vertical blinds, aluminum mini blinds
  • Service area: New Whiteland, Johnson County, IN and surrounding areas
  • If a mechanism has failed rather than a whole product, that's a service call and it moves quickly since we're fitting parts rather than ordering a custom build. New orders follow the usual two to five week fabrication.
  • Insured and bonded
  • Serving New Whiteland, IN since 2008

Mid century ranches here often carry vinyl replacement windows, with vinyl common on Sweetbriar and Brookside and aluminum frames still in place on Eastlawn. Vaulted living rooms turn up on both the 1950s streets and the 1990s ones, which puts some glass above the reach of a cord. The sunrooms at Break-O-Day and the transoms and skylights at Hilltop Commons call for shaped or motorized treatments. I agree to be contacted by New Whiteland Window Treatments regarding my inquiry.

New Whiteland got its start when US 31 was rerouted through the area, and the town incorporated in 1954. The oldest houses come from that decade and the next: mostly one story ranches, many under 1,500 square feet, along Sweetbriar Avenue, Brookside Drive and Southlane Drive, in plat sections that still go by number. Bittersweet Drive and Eastlawn Drive add ranches from the early 1970s, and Break-O-Day and Tracy Ridge carry houses built between 1978 and 2000. Country Gate and Hilltop Commons date from the 2000s, while Brownstone and Pleasant Creek are the newest streets, built since 2023. Most households own their homes, and the town reads as mid century ranches mixed with newer two story houses on small lots.

Hardware is worth understanding because it's what you touch every day. A cord lock holds position on a corded blind. A clutch and bead chain drive a roller. A continuous cord loop with a wall-anchored tensioner runs a heavy vertical. A tilt wand turns slats without a cord at all. In a busy New Whiteland house the lift system fails long before the fabric does, which is why we ask how the room gets used.

Central Indiana sits in climate zone 5A, which means you own both a heating load and a cooling load on the same window. That's the reason we push products that work in both directions instead of chasing one season. A solar shade solves July. A cellular shade earns its keep in July and January both. In a New Whiteland house you're usually better served by the one that does double duty.

Built in the Last Few Years?

Many of our New Whiteland customers moved into a house built by one of these companies. Builder blinds are usually stock sizes trimmed to fit, so if yours came with the house and never ran right, that is why. We measure the openings as built rather than off the plan.

What Our Crew Sees in New Whiteland

Mid century ranches here often carry vinyl replacement windows, with vinyl common on Sweetbriar and Brookside and aluminum frames still in place on Eastlawn. Vaulted living rooms turn up on both the 1950s streets and the 1990s ones, which puts some glass above the reach of a cord. In the newest houses, lot widths as narrow as 46 and 54 feet bring side windows close to the neighbor's wall, so privacy on the side walls comes first. Two builders are active on the newest streets. Beazer Homes built the Brownstone houses on Carroll Street and Sterling Place in 2023 and 2024, and Lennar's Pleasant Creek homes are 2026 builds in a community with a pool and a playground. The plans combine open great rooms with lofts, bonus rooms and first floor guest rooms. Lots are small, which keeps side windows close to the house next door, and each room of a new plan gets measured separately because the builders' options change the glass. The service area covers all of New Whiteland's 1.45 square miles, from the 1950s ranches near Whiteland Road to the Country Gate streets on the northeast side and the Brownstone and Pleasant Creek streets built since 2023. US 31 runs through the area, and I-65 is a short drive east. The town sits in the Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation, whose elementary school in town is a local landmark and whose high school, Whiteland Community High School, is in neighboring Whiteland. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover. We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones.

What We Are Running in New Whiteland Right Now

Both offers apply to work quoted and ordered while they are posted here. Ask about them at the in-home measure and we will put the discount on the written quote before you decide anything.

Offer 1

$500 Off Your First Exterior Screen, Plus a Free Motorization Upgrade

Take $500 off your first exterior screen and we will add the motorization upgrade at no charge. Exterior screens stop solar heat outside the glass, which is the only place you can stop it before it is already in the room, and a motor is the difference between using one and forgetting it.

Applies to a first exterior screen. Ask at the measure so the discount is on the written quote before you order. Motorized product runs on batteries that need replacing, about a year on Hunter Douglas PowerView.

Offer 2

Free Motorization Upgrade on Select Interior Shades

Pick from the qualifying interior shade lines and the motorization upgrade is free. It is worth most on the openings you would otherwise leave alone: tall great room glass, anything above a stair, and the west windows nobody remembers to close by four.

Select interior shade lines only. We will tell you at the measure which of your openings qualify. Batteries are a real running cost and are not included.

  • Payments deferred for a promotional period
  • Rate and period set by the lender
  • Quoted price held for the order
Equal Payment Plans

Divide the project cost into equal monthly payments across a fixed promotional period, so the budget is predictable from day one.

How We Handle New Whiteland Window Treatment

From one room to a whole house, New Whiteland Window Treatments measures every opening, orders it custom, and installs it with the same crew that took the measurements.

Faux Wood Blinds in New Whiteland

Price on faux wood moves with width, not with taste. A standard 2 inch slat in a common white costs what it costs, while extra-wide New Whiteland spans and a routeless slat push the number up. Nationally, custom treatments run roughly $250 to $2,600 per window and there's no local published figure.

Learn more

Wood Blinds in New Whiteland

A wood headrail needs depth inside the opening to sit flush, and older New Whiteland trim doesn't always offer it. When the depth isn't there, an outside mount on a bracket looks deliberate. A headrail hanging proud of shallow trim never does.

Learn more

Vertical Blinds in New Whiteland

Order runs about two to five weeks. Fabric vanes come out of dye lots, so replacing three damaged vanes on a New Whiteland door two years later gives you three vanes that don't quite match the rest. Buying a couple of spares up front costs almost nothing.

Learn more

Aluminum Mini Blinds in New Whiteland

Paint batches shift. Add a blind to a second New Whiteland window next year and the white won't quite match the first, particularly at the bottom rail. If the two windows sit in the same room, they belong on the same order.

Learn more

Roller Shades in New Whiteland

New Whiteland Window Treatments is insured and bonded, and every New Whiteland order goes on a written contract as Indiana's IC 24-5-11 requires above $150. Fabric name, openness, roll direction and mount type all appear on it, so nothing gets decided from memory later.

Learn more

Solar Shades in New Whiteland

January sun sits low, and a low sun comes in under everything. A shade sized to the New Whiteland opening will still let a hard beam across the floor in the afternoon, and lowering it fully is the only answer. That's geometry rather than a product flaw.

Learn more

Cellular Shades in New Whiteland

Cordless cellular is the default for a reason. There's no lift cord and nothing at a toddler's height, and inner-cord non-compliance is a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3. In a New Whiteland nursery we won't quote a corded lift at all.

Learn more

Zebra Shades in New Whiteland

A zebra shade is one fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands wrapped around a tube. Roll it a few inches and the bands line up for a view, or offset them and the solids overlap for privacy. That's one shade doing two jobs on a New Whiteland window.

Learn more

Roman Shades in New Whiteland

Two to five weeks, and the fabric gets cut from a bolt. If a New Whiteland room needs four shades, they'd better come off one bolt on one order. Two orders six months apart give you two dye lots, and on a patterned fabric the repeat may not even align.

Learn more

Woven Wood Shades in New Whiteland

Wide woven woods get heavy, and the weave carries its own weight across the span. On a broad New Whiteland opening we split into two shades rather than fight the sag, and on a tall one we'll look hard at whether a cordless lift can manage the load.

Learn more

Blackout Shades in New Whiteland

The disclosure first: an inside-mounted blackout shade leaks light down both sides. Lutron publishes three quarters of an inch per side on Roller 20/64, plus a sixteenth-inch factory deduction. A dark New Whiteland room comes from an outside mount or from side channels, and it doesn't come from fabric alone.

Learn more

Plantation Shutters in New Whiteland

A shutter frame needs mounting depth inside the opening, and older New Whiteland trim doesn't always give it. When the depth isn't there the frame mounts to the face of the trim instead, which changes the look and needs to be shown to you before it's ordered.

Learn more

Cafe Shutters in New Whiteland

Street-facing front rooms and ground floor baths are where these belong. A New Whiteland house sitting close to the sidewalk gets privacy at eye level and doesn't give up the light that a full-height shutter would have taken.

Learn more

Motorized Shades in New Whiteland

Indianapolis averages a July high of 85.2F, and a scene that drops the west shades at two in the afternoon does more for a New Whiteland living room than one you'd have to remember. Sun sensors and an astronomical timer both work, and they behave differently.

Learn more

Custom Drapery in New Whiteland

Drapery doesn't go in a washing machine. Most made panels are dry clean only and will shrink or pull at the hems if they get wet, so the real routine in a New Whiteland house is vacuuming the face with a brush head and steaming out a crease.

Learn more

Valances & Top Treatments in New Whiteland

IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract on residential work over $150, and top treatments are exactly where vague scope causes trouble. A New Whiteland quote should name the fabric, the construction, the finished dimensions and the mounting height, because none of that's standard from one workroom to another.

Learn more

Exterior Solar Shades in New Whiteland

Indiana issues no license for this trade, so what protects you is the paperwork. We're insured and bonded, and IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract over $150, which on a New Whiteland exterior job should name the mounting substrate, the mesh, the openness factor and the wind plan.

Learn more

Retractable Awnings in New Whiteland

Plenty of New Whiteland neighborhoods regulate what hangs off the back of a house, including projection and color. Read the covenants before the order goes in, because a custom acrylic that your association turns down isn't returnable and the frame is already sized to it.

Learn more

Commercial Window Treatments in New Whiteland

Coordination with other trades decides the sequence. Shade brackets want to land after ceilings and before final finishes, and a New Whiteland project that installs too early collects damage while one that installs too late fights everybody else for the same space. We'll get into the schedule early.

Learn more

Skylight Shades in New Whiteland

Solar-powered overhead shades charge from the light coming through the glass they cover, which sounds circular and mostly works. A north-facing New Whiteland skylight collects less than a south one, so we'll check the exposure before recommending it over a rechargeable wand or a hardwired run.

Learn more

Sliding Glass Door Blinds in New Whiteland

On door glass the openness factor question gets sharper, because you're looking through this opening more than any other. Three percent keeps a usable New Whiteland backyard view while cutting most of the glare, and one percent trades that view for the darkest afternoon in the room.

Learn more

Panel Track Blinds in New Whiteland

Panel track runs flat fabric sections along a headrail instead of hanging loose vanes, which is why a wide New Whiteland opening reads as clean planes rather than a wall of clattering strips. The panels overlap slightly and they'll glide past each other on carriers.

Learn more

Sheer Shades in New Whiteland

With the vanes fully open you get a genuine view, and it's better than people expect from a fabric product. The sheer facings are fine enough that a New Whiteland backyard stays legible, which is the argument for these over a light filtering roller that flattens everything.

Learn more

Pleated Shades in New Whiteland

Cordless lift is worth the small upcharge, and we'd spec it on every one of these. Inner-cord non-compliance is a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3, and in a New Whiteland house with kids or a curious dog, a shade with nothing hanging is simply the better product.

Learn more

Bamboo Shades in New Whiteland

The bottom rail on a woven shade is usually a wrapped hembar that keeps the weave hanging straight. It's also the part that takes every knock, so on a New Whiteland door or a high traffic window we'd rather spec a sturdier rail than the lightest option available.

Learn more

Dual Shades in New Whiteland

These are made to order like everything else, so you're looking at two to five weeks and specific band patterns can run longer. A New Whiteland order also locks roll direction and cassette choice at release, and neither of those can be changed once the tube is cut.

Learn more

Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades in New Whiteland

Against a plain bottom-up shade, this gives you a setting a standard shade simply doesn't have. The cost is the extra hardware and a slightly deeper stack, so the honest question on a New Whiteland window is whether anyone will actually use the top rail once the novelty passes.

Learn more

Cordless Blinds in New Whiteland

A cordless blind is a mechanism, and mechanisms have a cycle count behind them. Raised and lowered twice a day, a New Whiteland family room blind sees a few thousand cycles before anything feels different, and that's why slat material and headrail quality matter more here than the pretty part of the catalog.

Learn more

Hardwood Shutters in New Whiteland

Hardwood shutters for New Whiteland start with the wood itself. Basswood mills clean and stays light enough to hang on standard hinges, and poplar takes paint without the grain telegraphing through it. Neither one is a plastic that shrugs off moisture, and that's the whole conversation about where they belong.

Learn more

Composite Shutters in New Whiteland

Nationally, interior shutters run $175 to $800 per window, and composite generally sits lower in that published range than milled hardwood. The drivers on a New Whiteland quote are louver width, frame style, panel count and whether the opening needs a build-out, so two windows of one size don't always price the same.

Learn more

Smart Home Shade Integration in New Whiteland

A hardwired system avoids batteries entirely, and it's the right call during construction or a full remodel when the walls are open. Retrofitting power into a finished New Whiteland house is a different project, so most existing homes end up on rechargeable batteries with a charging plan.

Learn more

Blind Repair & Restring in New Whiteland

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. Older cord safety kits are worth removing, not repairing. Cleats, tie-downs, wall hooks and tension devices only work when someone uses them every single day. If a New Whiteland household has small children, converting the lift or changing the treatment is the durable answer, and we'll say that plainly.

Learn more

Shutter Repair in New Whiteland

Repainting a whole set is a real option and a real project. Panels come down, get prepped and sprayed, and go back up. It's the right move on a New Whiteland house where the shutters are structurally sound but the finish is thirty years out of date, and it costs less than replacement.

Learn more

Motorization Retrofit in New Whiteland

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. Retrofits don't fix fit. If a New Whiteland shade was built too narrow and leaks light down both edges, adding a motor gives you a light gap that opens on command. We'll tell you when the right answer is a new shade rather than a motor inside an old one.

Learn more

Outdoor Patio Shades in New Whiteland

Dogs and exterior mesh don't mix at ground level. A shade that comes all the way to the deck surface will meet claws eventually, so on a New Whiteland porch with animals we often stop the fabric short and accept a band of low light rather than replacing a torn panel every year.

Learn more

Office Window Treatments in New Whiteland

Cordless or motorized is the default specification now. Inner-cord non-compliance is a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3, and a New Whiteland workplace with visiting families, an on-site childcare arrangement or public access doesn't have a reason to install corded lift in the first place.

Learn more

Healthcare Window Treatments in New Whiteland

Healthcare window treatments across New Whiteland. Cleanable surfaces, cordless operation and fabrics that meet the flame propagation testing the occupancy requires, with documentation in the submittal. Installs get phased around patient hours rather than dropped on the schedule.

Learn more

Multifamily Window Treatments in New Whiteland

Damage recharge policies only hold up with documentation. If a New Whiteland property intends to bill a resident for a destroyed treatment, the move-in condition, the product installed, the date and its replacement cost all need to be on record, and that's another argument for one repeatable spec.

Local Expertise, Real Results

We'll build your New Whiteland window treatment plan around the openings in your own house.

New Whiteland Window Treatments provides custom window treatments across New Whiteland and Johnson County with a written scope on every residential job. Indiana's Home Improvement Contract Act requires that on work over $150, and it's a good practice regardless. When the product arrives there's no argument about what was ordered, because it's on a page you already signed.

Your New Whiteland project starts with the rooms you want to change. We'll ask what isn't working at the windows and look at how the light moves through your house. We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones.

Our Promise

We'll explain the mounting choice before you order for your New Whiteland home. If a product won't clear a handle or fit the available depth, we'll work through the options with you at the window.

Why New Whiteland Chooses Us

What Makes a New Whiteland Install Last

Serving New Whiteland and Johnson County with quality materials, thorough inspections, and transparent pricing.

A plan based on the local housing

Most New Whiteland households own their homes, which range from 1950s ranches in numbered plat sections to subdivisions of the 1990s and 2000s and Beazer Homes and Lennar streets built since 2023.

Measurements for your own frames

We'll check each opening in your New Whiteland home and look at the room available for the hardware. If a window has been changed since the house was built, the plan needs to work with the frame that's there today.

Samples viewed in your rooms

We'll discuss the finish alongside your New Whiteland room's existing trim and furniture. The light at your own window helps you judge whether the fabric suits the space.

Our Process

How a New Whiteland Job Runs, Start to Finish

Your New Whiteland window treatment project starts with a design visit. We'll work through the openings before the product is ordered, then plan installation around the confirmed order.

Discuss the rooms

We'll talk through what you'd like to change in your New Whiteland home and which rooms belong in the first phase. Your in home design consultation is free. We'll look at your openings and talk through the rooms you're planning to cover.

Measure the openings

We'll check the available mounting space and how the windows operate. Any recently replaced frames need to be measured in their finished condition.

Review the product plan

We'll discuss the fabric and the mounting arrangement before the order goes in. If an opening limits your first choice, we'll explain what that means for the treatment.

Confirm installation details

We'll confirm the order's installation plan and explain how to use the chosen treatments. Ask about access for maintenance if you're considering motorized shades.

Common Causes

What we see most often on New Whiteland window treatments

New Whiteland homeowners typically call us about these scenarios.

A Sensor Closing Shades At Odd Times

The sun sensor was set in October and by June it's triggering at completely the wrong hour because the sun angle has changed. That's a threshold setting rather than a fault. An astronomical timer that tracks sunset through the year removes most of the problem. It's a short visit and most owners assume the whole system has broken.

Ladder Strings That Have Let Go

We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. On an older wood blind, the strings that carry the slats fray and eventually snap, leaving slats sagging or hanging out of line. Restringing is a real option and it costs far less than a new blind. Whether it's worth doing depends on the condition of the headrail and the slats, and we'll tell you straight.

Blinds That Will Not Close Tight

Light comes through at the slat edges even when the wand is turned fully. Usually the tilt mechanism only closes properly in one direction, which is a manufacturing fault that should have been caught on install day. On an older blind it can also be worn ladder strings letting the slats sit unevenly.

A Bay Where Two Shades Collide

Nobody worked out the geometry at the corners, so when both are lowered they touch and neither hangs straight. It's solvable with different brackets or a deliberate small gap, and it's much cheaper to plan at the measure than to fix once three shades have been fabricated to the wrong clearances.

Somebody Fell Off A Ladder

A homeowner tried to hang shades on a stair landing in a New Whiteland two-story and decided halfway up that it was a bad idea. Angled openings, foyer glass and stairwell windows need proper access equipment. This is a very common reason a self-install project turns into a phone call. We bring the poles and the platforms because those openings are worth doing properly.

Cords A Grandparent Cannot Manage

Arthritic hands and a continuous loop don't get along, and a shade that's difficult to operate simply stops being operated. A wand tilt, a cordless lift or a motor changes that. It's one of the strongest and least discussed arguments for motorization in a New Whiteland home. Accessibility is a better argument for motorization than any of the usual ones.

How We Work

Five Stages, In This Order

Custom window treatments are made to your openings, so the order matters more than it does in most trades. This is how every New Whiteland job runs.

1

Free In-Home Measure

Every opening gets three widths, three heights and a diagonal square check, because houses settle and an opening that is out of square is the difference between a shade that runs true and one that binds. Mounting depth gets read at the jamb. It all goes on paper before any product conversation starts.

2

Product and Fabric, In Your Own Light

Samples get looked at in the room they are going in, not under showroom lighting. This is where openness factor, inside versus outside mount, roll direction and material get decided, and where we tell you the light gap you are going to live with.

3

Written Scope and Contract

Opening by opening, with the mount type, the light gap, the operation and the total price in writing. Indiana requires a written contract on residential work over $150 under IC 24-5-11, and we would write one anyway.

4

Custom Fabrication

Your sizes go to the workroom. Two to five weeks is typical depending on product and finish, longer on specialty shapes and motorized configurations. You get the real date at the measure rather than a range.

5

Install and Walkthrough

Brackets anchored for the substrate they are going into, everything checked level and square, motor travel limits set and scenes built with you standing there. Then we show you how it all works and take the packaging with us.

"Our first appointment eventually ended up being our last, thanks to their senior salesman, Justin Noel. Justin actually opened our eyes to the possibilities of what new blinds could do to enhance our quality of living. There was no high-pressure and Justin shared with us his many years of knowledge in the industry. Now that Leo has installed all 17 window shades, all we can say is wow. What a difference these shades have made in the overall appearance of our home. Leo was very professional, worked endlessly and installation was meticulous."

We'll discuss the plan before the rooms are finished and use the completed openings for the order's measurements.
Yes. We'll discuss the rooms you're ready to cover and how they connect to the rest of the house. If you're planning a later order, we'll talk through the finishes you want to coordinate.
We offer repairs only on treatments The Window Valet installed or has serviced before. If we haven't worked on your treatments, we'll book a consultation for new ones. We'll quote eligible repair work after assessing the treatment.
Indiana Climate

Indiana Weather Affects Window Treatments Year Round

Indiana sees some of the most varied weather in the country. New Whiteland homeowners live in IECC climate zone 5A, which carries a real cooling load in summer and a real heating load in winter. July averages a high near 85F, January averages a high near 36F with lows near 21F, and the muggy season runs from late May into late September. That is why the same window can be the hottest room in the house in July and the coldest in January.

Check the room at the hours you use it

Tell us when glare affects your New Whiteland room. We'll look at which window is responsible and discuss a treatment for that use of the space.

Review privacy after dark

A fabric that gives a daytime view may leave the room visible after dark. We'll discuss that difference before you choose a shade for an occupied room.

Keep working windows accessible

We'll check the treatment against the sash and the controls you use to open the window. The finished arrangement needs to let you operate both.

Connect the plan across a room

If you're covering several openings in one room, we'll discuss how the treatments look together. Each opening still gets its own measurements.

Choosing the Right Treatment for New Whiteland Rooms

An honest breakdown of the three we specify most often, and when each one is the right answer.

Cellular Shades

The one product in this trade with measured energy numbers behind it. Trapped air in the cells does the work, and DOE and ORNL testing found cellular shades saved up to 20 percent on heating energy and up to 15 percent on total heating and cooling against a bare window. In a New Whiteland house that matters in January and again in July, which is unusual for one product. Single cell suits most rooms, double cell where the glass is large or the room runs cold. Top-down bottom-up gets you daylight and privacy at the same time.

Both seasonsInsulating$$
Solar & Roller Shades

What you reach for when the complaint is afternoon sun. Solar fabrics come in stated openness factors, and that number is the whole decision: a lower openness cuts more glare and more of the view, a higher one keeps the view and cuts less. On a west or south New Whiteland window this is usually the honest answer rather than blackout, because blackout kills the room. Cassette or fascia hides the roll, and roll direction gets decided at the measure so the fabric does not foul a crank or a lock.

Glare controlKeeps the view$$$
Plantation Shutters

The one that stays with the house. Shutters are a finish rather than a covering, and they do not get replaced every few years. In New Whiteland the material choice is technical rather than a matter of taste: composite and poly in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and sunrooms, because a four month humid season followed by a dry heated winter will move real hardwood, and hardwood only where the room stays conditioned. Louver size, frame style and divider rail get decided standing at your window.

Light Control

See What Each Fabric Does To The Light

Pick a fabric below and the window updates. It's a drawing rather than a photograph, so read it as a rough guide to what each family does in a New Whiteland room, and to what it doesn't do.

Fabric type

Sheer, 10 percent openness

Ten percent of the weave is open, so you keep the view and most of the daylight. Glare drops a little. After dark, once your lamps are on, someone outside can read shapes through it, which is why this belongs on a view window rather than a bedroom.

Openness factor is printed on the fabric card, so you can compare one line against another before you order anything.

Keeps the viewNot private after dark

Solar, 5 percent openness

The usual pick for a west window or a covered porch. You can still read the yard through it, glare comes down noticeably, and the fabric intercepts a good share of the sun before it reaches you at four in the afternoon.

It also cuts the UV landing on floors and furniture. NFRC puts UV at roughly 40 to 60 percent of fading damage, so this slows fading rather than stopping it.

View and glare controlSlows fading

Solar, 3 percent openness

A tighter weave. The room goes dimmer and the view drops back to an outline. Choose it where the sun is the problem and the view is second, which around here usually means a west wall in July. That's a common call on this side of Indianapolis.

Openness affects how much you see out, not how private you are. A 3 percent fabric still shows silhouettes at night.

View becomes an outlineStrong glare control

Solar, 1 percent openness

Close to a solid fabric with a little view left in it. This is the strongest glare control in the solar family.

The trade is that it darkens the room on a gray January day too. Indianapolis averages a January high near 36F and the light is flat, so think about how the room reads in both seasons before you commit.

Darkest solar optionDim on gray days

Light filtering

No view through it. Daylight comes through the face diffused, so the room stays bright without a hot spot across the television or the kitchen island. This is the default for living spaces.

It isn't private in reverse at night. With the lamps on and the sun down, silhouettes still show.

No view through itBright without the glare

Room darkening

A denser fabric, usually with a liner behind it. Most of the light coming through the face is gone.

Light still arrives around the edges on an inside mount, so a room darkening shade gives you a dim room rather than a dark one. If someone in the house sleeps during the day, say so at the measure and we'll scope it differently.

Dim, not darkEdges stay bright

Blackout

The fabric itself passes essentially no light. What you'll still see is the perimeter. Lutron publishes an inside-mount light gap of about 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20 and 64 shades, along with a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and shades over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height-to-width ratio get larger gaps than that.

So if you need a genuinely dark bedroom, that gap has to be dealt with on purpose, either with side channels or by going outside mount. We tell you which one your opening can carry while we're still standing in the room.

Dark facePerimeter needs a plan

Openness factor is a measured fabric spec, so you can compare it line to line. The category names are not measured. One maker's room darkening can behave like another maker's light filtering, which is why the sample books come to the measure and get opened in the room they're going in, at the hour that room has the problem.

Break-O-Day shares its name with the elementary school in New Whiteland, and the subdivision sits on Rypma Row and Morningside Court on the southwest side of town, inside the town limits. The houses date from 1978 to 1993, which puts them after the 1950s and early 1970s streets and ahead of the 2000s subdivisions. They're brick and vinyl ranches of about 1,435 to 2,000 square feet, some with vaulted ceilings, on lots from about a quarter acre to 0.3 acre, with mature trees and sidewalks along Morningside Court. Corner lots hold some of the 1980s brick ranches on Rypma Row, and the 1990s ranches on Morningside Court have a covered porch and a large backyard on a quiet court, with no homeowners association. Houses of roughly 1,200 to 1,440 square feet line Hilltop Commons Boulevard, built between 2003 and 2016, and they're single story ranches with brick and vinyl exteriors. The street is inside the New Whiteland limits on the northwest side of town, with sidewalks and street lights among the community features. Some houses look onto a pond, and others have a back patio that overlooks open grassy acreage. Lots are compact, around 0.14 acre, and the houses sit on slab foundations with attached two car garages. A homeowners association with covenants and restrictions covers the street, and its dues pay for lawn care, maintenance and snow removal, which suits a neighborhood of one level homes built for easy upkeep. Tracy Ridge Boulevard runs just north of the center of New Whiteland, inside the town limits, with Hilltop Commons a short way to the west. The houses date from 1991 to 2000, single story ranches with three bedrooms and two baths, from about 1,200 square feet in the early 1990s houses to about 1,420 in the 2000 houses. Lots run around 0.15 acre, and the houses sit on slab foundations with vinyl and brick exteriors and two car attached garages. The street sits minutes from Greenwood and Franklin, near shopping and dining, and concrete patios with a mature tree for shade are typical out back, while the boulevard has no homeowners association, so the window plan is the homeowner's alone. View Tracy Ridge window treatment details →
Country Gate holds some of the largest houses in New Whiteland, with two story plans from 2003 and 2004 on Country Gate Drive and Hickory Pine Drive. The streets sit on the northeast side of town, inside the New Whiteland limits. Sizes run from about 1,233 to 3,704 square feet, and the large houses stand on lots of about 0.15 acre, so the neighbors sit close. The bigger plans have a great room, a large family room and a breakfast room that seats eight, with three bedrooms upstairs and an office nook in the primary bedroom, and covered patios and fenced yards with a storage barn are common out back. Exteriors are vinyl siding, often with brick on the front. View Country Gate window treatment details →
Beazer Homes built Brownstone in 2023 and 2024 on Carroll Street and Sterling Place, two of the newest streets in New Whiteland, near Morningside Court and Pleasant View Lane on the southwest side of town. Sterling Place ends in a quiet cul de sac with pond views. The houses come as single story Craftsman ranches of about 1,900 square feet and two story farmhouse style homes of about 2,400 square feet. Lots are small, at about 0.17 to 0.19 acre, and the houses have no basement. The community has a park, a playground and a nature area, and an association managed by Associated Asset collects dues that cover their upkeep along with maintenance, snow removal, irrigation, insurance and sewer. View Brownstone window treatment details →
Lennar is building Pleasant Creek in two sections called Venture and Carriage, with the quick move in homes on Pleasant View Lane carrying New Whiteland addresses while the builder's own address for the community is on North Sawmill Road in Franklin, so the community straddles the line between the two towns on paper. The homes are 2026 builds, with two story plans of 2,169 to 2,460 square feet and a single story plan of 1,567 square feet. It's a master planned community with a community pool and a playground. Lots are narrow, with minimum widths of 46 feet in Venture and 54 feet in Carriage and minimum sizes of 5,327 and 6,462 square feet, so the houses sit close on the sides. View Pleasant Creek window treatment details →
Sweetbriar Avenue carries some of the oldest houses in New Whiteland, built from 1955 to 1960. It runs through the east side of town, inside the New Whiteland limits, in plat sections labeled 6th Sub Div and 8th Sub Div. The houses are one story ranches on lots of about 0.19 to 0.33 acre, with vinyl siding and brick accents on slab foundations, and sizes along the street range from 875 square feet up to about 1,975. It's an established neighborhood just seconds from US 31, with basketball and tennis courts, disc golf and a playground nearby, and the street has no homeowners association, so the window plan answers to the homeowner alone and the only limits are the ones in the old plat. View Sweetbriar Avenue window treatment details →
Southlane Drive mixes houses from 1960 and 1969 in plat sections labeled 9th Sub Div and 8th Sub Div, a label it shares with part of Sweetbriar Avenue. The street runs near the middle of New Whiteland, inside the town limits and close to the center point, with Sweetbriar Avenue to the east. Lots range from about 0.17 acre to 0.3 acre, with some large corner lots, and sizes run from about 910 to 1,960 square feet. Many houses have been remodeled, and in some the garage was converted into living space. Fenced backyards, storage sheds and carports are common, and the street has no homeowners association, which leaves exterior choices to each owner. View Southlane Drive window treatment details →
Brookside, Parkview, Crestwood and Belaire Drives sit within about a quarter mile of each other at the south end of New Whiteland near Whiteland Road, and their houses date from 1955 to 1959. Belaire, Crestwood and Brookside carry the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sub Div labels, numbered sections of one older plat. The houses are one story ranches with vinyl siding, from about 875 to 1,572 square feet, on lots of about 0.18 to 0.22 acre with mature trees. Some Brookside Drive houses look out on trees and woods behind them, and Belaire Drive sits at the heart of New Whiteland. None of the four streets has a homeowners association, and the compact lots keep the houses within a few steps of each other. View Brookside Drive window treatment details →
Bittersweet Drive and Oakden Road carry a 10th Sub plat label, with houses from 1972 and 1974, and Eastlawn Drive close by adds houses from 1971. The streets lie at the north end of New Whiteland, inside the town limits, and sidewalks run through the neighborhood. Corner lots on Oakden Road are large and fenced, with mature trees, and the location makes the commute to Greenwood, Indianapolis, Franklin or Columbus easy. Sizes run from 950 to about 1,330 square feet, and the houses are one story ranches on slab foundations, with brick and aluminum siding, on lots between about 0.19 and 0.25 acre. The streets have no homeowners association, and the 1970s plans share a compact footprint with a front porch. View Bittersweet Drive window treatment details →
